Hello... AP fever

First, to address some reader comments, we apologize we forgot to cover "the bomb." (We're not sure if admin would've let us anyway.) At the Tuffy Tribune, hard-hitting reporting hasn't been our primary focus, but we'll explore some deeper topics in the future as they come up. Keep holding us accountable!

Because of AP Season, Sports Med, and every other activity under the sun, the FP newsroom was a little empty this month. So this edition may seem sparse. Regardless, we are still proud of what we can offer, including a daytime interview with Nurse Jackie!

(By the way, the Press is working on an undercover investigation. We will be publishing our findings soon. It may shock many of you.)

My special apologies go to Sam Foust, who texted me, "Track coverage was abysmal in this months edition." Mr. Foust, I made it a priority to get a reporter out on the track, just for you. Please enjoy.

We want to hear from you!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Review

By Shivneil Pillay

Yahoo! Hearing that two-foot Nintendo legend in trailers, clips, and my For You page made me jump for a power-up for this film release. I walked into the movie theater with high expectations. Nostalgia excites the best parts of every viewer’s childhood, especially us teenagers. Considering the voice actors Anya Taylor Joy (Princess Peach), Chris Pratt (Mario), and the “revelator” Jack Black (Bowser), I was at the edge of my seat. The lights dimmed. The bright red Nintendo sign glared.

The movie introduces the two brothers, Mario and Luigi, as plumbers working 9-5, living with their Italian parents. It’s hilarious as the two Bros. overuse their Italian accent in their advertisements and then code-switch back to regular American accents.

Throughout the movie, I’m glad the writers didn’t base everything off the original series. Instead, they play around just a little with the screenplay. For example, my favorite switch-up is the newly independent, femme-fatale character of Princess Peach. Usually in the games, Princess Peach is the damsel in distress. However, in the movie, I love how Peach has her own fighting scenes and a whole mini-battle with Bowser. It is great seeing the representation that princesses don’t need to be saved; they can do the saving!

An iconic character I need to highlight is Bowser himself. Jack Black is known for his eclectic roles, but this was on another level. Singing an original love song from the perspective of a macho villain is insane. The song “Peaches, Peaches, Peaches” went viral on TikTok with over 50,000 posts. Black’s talent is phenomenal. He captures Bowser’s aggressive yet soft demeanor perfectly. I don’t know anybody else that could replicate the same effect Mr. Black produced.

Next, I appreciate the cute “aha” moments I recognized as a Nintendo fan, like seeing Luigi stranded on the Dark Lands and entering a haunted mansion. Another one was where all the characters customized their go-karts and raced down a rainbow.

While I am hyping this movie up, there is a minute downside: the movie is incredibly predictable. I do have prior Super Mario knowledge, but there was no reason for every scene to be so co-aligned. There were hardly any twists. There were no new characters. It was a plain watch. Thankfully, I am an individual who just enjoys movies and doesn’t break down each little part of the film, so it didn’t really affect me.

All in all, I give this movie a 7.5/10. It has fun theatrics and humor, but it was highly predictable. Super Mario Bros does take a huge spot in the film industry, and I am expecting a sequel (with Yoshi entering the cast).

FPHS Performing Arts Center

FRANKLIN PIERCE HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - It's valued at $12 million. It can hold more than 500 people. And it's set to complete construction next Fall.

The PAC is a long overdue upgrade for all FP musicians and actors, who will never have to perform on the cafeteria stage again. In addition to the new stage, the architects note, "The building has...a set shop, green & dressing rooms as well as a lobby which doubles as an art displays space." (They failed to mention the futuristic bathroom as well, fitted with cubed sinks and slim lights.)

In the construction proposal to the County Commission, architects also stated the PAC would "[relocate] and [extend] the student pick-up/drop-off lane." They write, "This allows for the reduction of driveways off 18th Ave E from five to three. One of the remaining driveways will provide student and visitor parking and the pick-up/drop-off location; the other will be restricted to emergency vehicle access and loading. This improves traffic circulation and keeps the pick-up/drop-off lane from backing onto 18th Ave E."

Finally, the PAC will also come with newly planted trees and sidewalks along 18th Ave.

When asked about the PAC's future, band director Mr. P. says he plans to hold upcoming community-wide Solo and Ensemble contests at FP. He also states the space could be leased out for other community events.

Dylan Bare took these pictures for a project in Mr. Krick's Advanced Photography class:

The Tuffy Tribune will report inside the finished auditorium next school year.

Varsity Boys Soccer Boots Patriots

FRANKLIN PIERCE STADIUM - Another marvelous game from our Boys Soccer team! The crowd buzzed for our rival faceoff, and they didn't have to wait long for the game to go into full swing.

In the first 15 minutes, our Cards had 3 goals from Ethan Shoemaker and Marvin Soeum, with an assist from Logan Sams. It was a rocky game with many "interesting" referee calls and close fouls. However, our Cards continued to have good sportsmanship, helping pick up any player who fell.

By the end of the half, our Cards were up 4-0, and at the beginning of the second half, Marvin Soeum, assisted by Ethan Shoemaker, scored our last goal.

My favorite part of the game was a yellow card given to the Patriots after one of their players threw their shoe in anger. It's always entertaining, Boys! Keep up the terrific work!

Varsity Girls Tennis Secures Senior Night Dub

FRANKLIN PIERCE TENNIS COURTS – Celebrating Seniors Keeva Lawrence, Emma Swenson, and Jeannie Yoon, FP triumphs over Fife in a 3-2 Senior Night victory.

All Seniors won; Lawrence played #1 Singles, and Swenson/Yoon played #2 Doubles. Lawrence won her first set by a close margin but steamrolled her second set, 6-0, or in a "bagel." Swenson/Yoon lost their first set, won their second set, and emerged victorious in a seven-point tiebreak in their third set.

Before the match, the team divided into groups to make signs and stuff baskets for their assigned Senior. Those baskets contained Goldfish, Skinny Pop Popcorn, and scrunchies-just to name a few. On match day, Coach Parsons brought flowers, and the team decorated the fence with streamers. After her match, Yoon divided her basket's pretzels and Sour Patch Kids with the team as they cheered on Doubles #3, who won the meet for FP.

Now a little bit about our Seniors:

Lawrence has been on the tennis team for four years. Her favorite memories are going out to eat after winning matches.

Swenson joined her Freshman year, though due to COVID, her first full year was Junior year. Her favorite memories are also going out to eat with the team.

Yoon has played tennis for FP all her high school career, except for her Sophomore year because of COVID and golf season. Regarding her favorite memory, she said, "[My] fav memory from tennis is in my junior year when we each told funny stories and gave each other stupid nicknames. [The] matching nicknames on the back of the sweatshirts was always the best inside joke."

When asked about the seniors, Coach Parsons offered this remark:

"Our seniors have been a vital part in the success of the season and the future of this program. They have set an example for what excellence looks like and with [Keeva] holding down number one singles all year and Emma and Jeannie going 9-0 since finding [their] swing of things, all the seniors have...helped the team to hold a 9-3 record and 2nd place overall in league. Two more matches to go and I know the seniors are going to win out."

The final scores were as follows:

Singles #1: 6-4, 6-0
Singles #2: 1-6, 5-7
Doubles #1: 1-6, 2-6
Doubles #2: 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-5)
Doubles #3: 5-7, 6-2, 10-6

Ms. Pascal's Artist of the Month

This month, Ms. Pascal would like to highlight Lucy Bruce.

"My name is Lucy Bruce and I [am] a junior here at FP. I have always liked to create art and try new art mediums. Makeup art is one of my favorite art forms. During the summer I go to an art makeup program in Oregon. Music helps me tap into my creativity and I believe everything is a form of art when it comes to being creative.”

Hoy Sonrió

Ayer no sonreí
pues el mundo me dijo que mi destino no es mío

Ayer no sonreí
pues las palabras crueles me mantenían derrotada

Ayer no sonreí

Today I smile

Yesterday I didn't smile
for the world told me my destiny was not mine

Yesterday I didn't smile
for cruel words kept me defeated

Yesterday I didn't smile
for the expectations of my culture were too many

But, not smiling was not going to be forever

Today I smile
for I learned the oppression from the world was an illusion

Today I smile
for I learned that the words that really matter are
mine loving me more every day

Today I smile
for I no longer try to live up to the world's expectations
only mine

Today I smile
for I have the most important love in my family

Today I smile
and tomorrow I will continue smiling for I know is an insult to all that don't want to see me smile
